Published August 13, 2008

Behold!  The first episode of Pop Culture Zoo’s film review podcast!  We have gathered together in the Garage of Doom to discuss the merits of Ben Stiller, Tom Cruise and Robert Downey Jr. in the action/comedy Tropic Thunder.  In our explicit and semi-drunken revelry, we review what may be the ultimate Hollywood lampoon in this latest flick from director Ben Stiller. Join Dan, Bob, Ian and Ryan’s Notes as we dissect everything about this movie, from Booty Sweat to Nick Nolte.

Listen and bare witness to the glory of this Pop Culture Zoo podcast! Also, much like the film itself, this podcast is quite explicit. Sensitive ears be warned!

Alright, before I get my Pop Culture Zoo card revoked, or wake up with a horse’s head on my bed, I got some ’splainin’ to do:

As for as my call about the movie offending people; Tropic Thunder, is a satire, and satires make fun of people. Granted 98% of it is directed at the Hollywood system, and the people that buy into it– but I still feel that the South Park guys do the best satire around.

And I still stand by my call on the movie not being as funny as Zoolander- yet. (But is really, really close.) Zoolander is an incredibly re-watchable and quotable movie. And rewatchabiity (made up a word!) is, for me at least, the true test of the ‘great’ funny movies.

Also, Pineapple Express is funniest movie of the year thus far. It sounds like I’m in the minority, but I thought the action dragged in the final act of TT, whereas the action in PE was the perfect mix of over-the-top action and awkwardly realistic slap-fighting and gunplay.

Ah well, this is what I get for writing in instead of talking it out with you guys. But the podcast really wouldn’t sound as good with my mumbly, monotone voice.

Also–that really sucked when that soda spilled on me. Sitting in a puddle of coke may have caused me to think the movie a little worse than it actually was.

Oh, and two Tropic Thunder-related recommendations:

rainofmadness.com, which is the website version of what ‘Heart of Darkness’ (the documentary) was to Apocalypse Now.

And check out the pilot for ‘Heat Wave and Jack’, if you’ve never seen it. Another Stiller-directed masterpiece starring Jack Black and Owen Wilson, sort of.

A fair statement sir. The final act of TT was a bit drawn out, but I was more impressed to see that Stiller had the directing chops to pull off some of those action scenes.

Your comments and sense of humor are appreciated… even if you are Canadian :)

    Enjoyed the movie
edgy.. Downey jr was great as well as Jack Black’s facial contortions.

I was cracking up this entire movie.

It got really raunchy when Jack Black was tied to the tree and he was talking about sucking balls to get untied from the tree
