According to the New York Times‘ “Bits Blog” Ridley Scott announced today that a division of one of his production companies, RSA Films, is developing a prequel to Blade Runner as an Internet series of five to ten minute linked shorts. The series will take place prior to the 2019 setting of the film and seems to only be a peripheral prequel as it seems it will depict events starting two years from now. David Bausola, founder of production partner Ag8, describes it thus, “It’s actually based on the same themes as Blade Runner. It’s the search for what it means to be human and understanding the notion of empathy. We are inspired by Blade Runner.”

Two other aspects make this even more interesting. First, the series will be released under a Creative Commons license, which will mean that anyone can remix the episodes and use them for their own purposes. Secondly, story ideas will be sought out from viewers via the social website FriendFeed.
