“Dr. Earnest Drake’s” series of books on the study dragons, may well be on its way to the big screen. On Friday, Universal purchased the film rights to the Dragonology series of books, reports the HWR.

The immensely popular fiction series, by Dugald A. Steer, is written as if they were the nonfiction product of a Victorian era scientist studying the real, but secret, world of dragons. The original book was published 2003 and has sold more than 2.8 million copies, in 32 languages, worldwide. The other titles in the series have brought the total sales to 5.7 million copies.

Leonard Hartman (Fury- in production for Universal) has been tapped to write the script and executive produce the adaptation. Reportedly the story will revolve around a group of intrepid dragonologist as they work to stop a global plot of a villain bent on taking control of the world’s dragons and using them to wipe out man kind.
