Details were scarce during Thursday’s Red Sonja panel, but the excitement was enough to keep the crowd at bay. Robert Rodriguez explained that his motivation for creating a Red Sonja film is seated in when he got a hold of a Conan comic at age eight. He has been longing to adapt the characters from Robert E. Howard’s universe ever since he started making his own movies.

Rodriguez will be producing the movie, but told the crowd he wants “to get his hands dirty,” working closely alongside director Douglas Aarniokoski, who has worked with Rodriguez since Four Rooms. It was also revealed that Rodriguez holds the rights to the potential new Conan film and is hoping to direct it, maintaining continuity in Howard’s creations.

Rose McGowan was also at the panel, and slides of her as the ass-kicking, sword-slinging barbarian princess were shown. Locations and schedules are being finalized, and cast announcements will happen shortly after. The villains for the movie have not yet been revealed.
