SDCC 08: The Dark Horse Comics Panel
The Dark Horse panel started off with a few technical difficulties somewhat reminiscent of Emerald City Comic Con, Scott Allie joked. After announcing how well Dark Horse did at the Eisner’s last night they quickly fixed their power point presentation and then moved into announcements.
A new BPRD story drawn by the brothers Gabriel Ba and Fabio Moon is coming later this year.
On Buffy, some of the old television writers will be doing various issues then to be followed up by a 5 issue run by Brad Meltzier.
Nov. 26 sees the release of the 2nd volume of Umbrella Academy…Not much was leaked except that this next story would focus on #5.
Rex Mundi is coming to an end next year but to get more people to read the book. Dark horse will be offering a special Rex Mundi story online at CBR. The Story starts in Issue #13 and then is continued online.
A new Serenity 3 issue mini was announced to be centered around Sheppard Book’s Origin.
A one shot Hellboy book called Chapel of Malock with pencils by Mike Mignolia.
War of Frogs Vol. 2 starts in Nov.
With the release of Joss Whedon’s Doctor Horrible Sing-a-Long Blog and online comic of Captain Hammer will be up at Dark Horse Comics Presents Myspace.
A new Mister X series and a release of an omnibus of old Mister X work.
New Solomon Kain and Kull series.
Again touched on the New Conan: Cimmerian comic with covers by Frank Cho.
Star Wars: Force Unleashed comic to coincide with the release of the game. As well there are two new Clone Wars projects; one is a monthly comic and the other is a series of digests.
Indiana Jones and the Tomb of the Gods was announced.
Clamp a manga title will see an omnibus release and then for the first time ever a manga series will be released simultaneously in USA, Japan and Korea… and that will be a Clamp story.
Then Halfway through the panel we were interrupted by Mike Richardson the founder of Dark Horse comics and entertainment. He brought actor Bruce Campbell and writer Mark Verhidden up on the panel to speak about “My Name is Bruce” They showed two clips of the film to let fans know that this film is in fact being made.
The first of these clips showed a group of teenagers in a grave yard causing trouble when one of the kids awakens a demon. The demon goes on to kill all but one of the kids. There are some very funny death scenes. A scene where one of the boys grabs his girlfriend’s breast and then gets his hand chopped off by the demon however the hand remains on the breast as the girl tries to shake it off. The scene got a great reaction from the crowd.
The second scene involved Bruce Campbell at the point where finally realizes that the demon is real. Instead of being heroic he runs in fear. In doing so he begins to shoot wildly and starts killing the local towns people on accident… real funny stuff.
The panel ended with a Q&A with Bruce and crew. If you have ever seen Bruce speak you know he is a really funny guy. One fan stood up and told Bruce that he was his favorite actor… in return Bruce gave the fan $2.00.
They are in talks to do a sequel to “My Name is Bruce” called “My Name is Still Bruce”
Bruce stated that there will not be a Bubba Ho-Tepp sequel.
