Since we first reported on the plans for what is perhaps the most innovative twist on a fighting game, Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, we have been coveting more details. The game, courtesy of Midway Games, blends the Mortal Kombat and DC Comics universes with one-on-one match ups.
With questions like, how does anyone scrap with Superman and walk away with all their limbs attached, we ran, not walked, to the SDCC panel on the game.
To kick off the panel, Ed Boone and Jimmy Palmiotti shared a game trailer, game play footage (below) and then took questions from the crowd.
The game will introduce some new mechanics. The first is Free Fall Kombat. Which as you could guess, involves striving and struggling with your opponent while plummeting from a precipice, all the while trying not to be the one on the bottom at impact. The second is called Klose Kombat. This involves grappling moves but instead of doing some passe passive throw move the camera zooms in closer on the fighters and then you can dole out heavier blows to your opponent.
As for the one of the most coveted aspects of the game; MK characters will have fatalities and DC character have brutalities.
The creative team seems to be really excited about the story mode of the game which sounds like it will be broken up into character based chapters. For instance in the Flash chapter, once you beaten a certain number of opponents you will switch to another character.
Speaking of characters the current roster includes (with more to be announced):
Batman
Flash
Superman
Green Lantern
Shazam
Catwoman
Joker
Sub-Zero
Scorpion
Sonja
Shang Tsung
Liu Kang
Jax
Kitana
with special super hidden unlockable character- Jimmy Palmiotti!
As for the Superman question- Why Superman doesn’t just kick everyone’s leather clad derrières is because when the two universes collide it creates a kind of magical world thus lowering Supe’s power level.
So far the game looks pretty good. The game environments represented in the video are gorgeous, the character modeling is first rate, the hero’s signature moves are pretty sweet and the battle damage characters experience is a very nice touch.
